Greatly infuenced by the fantasy worlds and figures curated through fashion photography at the start of the new millennium, Vladimir S. Santiago’s work merges editorial aesthetics with a multidisciplinary practice. Santiago uses photography, video, and installation to tell folkloric inspired stories adapted to modern day pleasures and anxieties. Focusing on bright, contrasting colors, and the varying textures found in textiles, Santiago reveals their sensuality, humor, poetry, and drama while questioning how Arte Popular has faced historic and continued devaluation. Their use of Rosa mexicano is central to their exploration of the many societal needs filled by fashion and craft, while critiquing and satirizing the often contradictory expectations of Machismo in mexican culture.
